Track Position Notes: For this recording, there was conflicting information on the label. Both Mono and Stereo are mentioned. After listening to the playback, I think the WOUB recording was originally half-track mono, and then the tape was re-used to store some other commerical recordings. This master is a combination of a transfer performed on both the Sony TC-651 and the Tascam 32. I opted to use the Tascam 32 to transfer from 4m:09s until 18m:21s in the original half-track mono, and the Sony for the remainder as channel 1 on a 4-track head. I think this is the best possible quality for the whole performance. The skip at arond 4m:7s was on the original tape and not a result of the digital editing.
Repair Notes: This Sony PR-150 tape was by far the worst tape to transfer. It was very sticky and completely unplayable. The audio sounded like it was run through some awful bitcrush distortion. Here’s what I had to do to get it transferred successfully:
-Baked at 130degF in a food dehydrator for 24hrs, cooled for 24hrs. No improvement.
-Baked again for 48hrs, cooled for 24hrs. No Improvement.
-Treated this tape with Last Factory Tape preservative. Significant improvement, but still had distortion and audio was of fair quality at best.
-Finally treated this this tape with a highly experimental solvent of NuFinish and Charcoal Lighter Fluid which allowed me to make a near perfect transfer.
